The Brain As A Living Bio-Computer
In order to fully train the individual to realize his greatest
potential in life, it first becomes necessary to instruct
him in the rudimentary facts concerning his own mental apparatus.
We wish to explain in brief its most basic functions and how
individual brain power may be increased almost indefinitely.
Also, how this increased mental power can be applied by the
individual to advance his own personal evolution in life.
The seat of the mental functions is in the brain. The brain
is the most amazing and wonderful part of man's body. Not
only does it perform the noble office of transforming physical
and chemical vibrations into the mysterious element of consciousness,
but it also regulates and controls all the intricate processes
necessary for the life of the organism. Surprisingly though,
the brain is merely the instrument through which the mind
expresses itself. The brain has no power of its own. If there
were no mind animating the brain, there would be no mental
processes.
Man for the most part, remained in ignorance of how his
brain functioned until he himself tried to design a brain.
As modern man entered the age of the computer, he began to
experience interesting insights into the functions of his
own brain. The functions of the thinking and analytical portions
of mans brain turned out to be very similar to the same functions
of the computer. With the knowledge of how to control the
computer to function most efficiently, man gained insight
in how to control himself and bring about in his life more
efficient living.
We possess, each one of us, around 14 billion brain cells.
A brain cell is different than any other cell in the body.
It is different than all others because it has a completely
different function. The purpose of the brain cell is to carry
on the processes of thought and other related mental functions.
Thought processes are accomplished similar to the computer
function of forming circuits. Different cells are associated
with different areas of thought, which in total is your conscious
SELF!!! The neurological capacities of the human bio-computer
are simply astronomical. Any one of the more than 14 Billion
brain cells can form circuits, relationships, or associations
with more than 25,000 other brain cells. The associative capabilities
of man's brain is fourteen-billion to the twenty-five-thousandth
power. Meaning you would multiply 14,000,000,000 x 14,000,000,000,
25,000 times. This is a quantity larger than the number of
atoms in the universe. This electrochemical network of neurons
articulating with each other, inconceivable in its complexity,
is the anatomical structure of consciousness.
Though each individual contains within his own cranium,
the uncomprehendable possibilities to manifest astronomical
degrees of intelligence, we find that the greatest proportions
of the masses slumber along utilizing extremely minute quantities
of this wonderful power. Why? One of the reasons is that we
are almost totally ignorant of the genesis of intelligence.
Our race as a whole is laboring under the misconception that
the minds of children can be developed by the mere training
of their memory and the exercises practiced in modern schools.
This process produces mind conditioned robots and not free
thinkers, and in many cases retards the development of intelligence.
"Different mental faculties are localized in different
areas of the brain, and the power of a faculty depends on
the number of active brain cells in that area. Through heredity
different persons inherit brains with some sections naturally
larger than the same section of others. Depending on which
areas are of greater size, the person will manifest the qualities
that are associated with that section of the brain more strongly.
Hence the term "born musician," "born mechanic,"
"natural orator," etcetera." (Wallace D. Wattles,
How To Be A Genius). A phrase familiar to all is, "John
Doe will never go anywhere in life, because he doesn't have
any brains," or "the Smith kid will never make it
in life, because he doesn't have anything upstairs."
The fact of the matter is, that John Doe has a living computer
sitting inside his cranium with the associative possibilities
of 14-billion to the twenty-five-thousandth power. The only
problem with anyone, mentally retarded excluded, is that they
are not utilizing this miraculous, God given wonder.
We have seen that the brain carries on the functions of
thought by forming associations or circuits. It can be readily
and plainly seen that by thinking along new lines of thought
or on new subjects, new associations will be formed. The mental
circuitry can be deliberately increased by applying conscious
thought to specific areas of the brain. It is a known fact
that certain thoughts call into operation a certain set of
brain cells. It has also been found that a small brain section,
with many fine and active cells, gives as powerful expression
to a faculty as a larger brain section with coarser cells.
It has also been found that by concentrating ones thought
forces into any section of the brain, with the will and purpose
to develop that section, the brain cell circuits may be multiplied
indefinitely. "Any faculty, power, or talent you possess,
no matter how small or rudimentary, may be increased; you
can multiply the brain cells in any area until it acts as
powerfully as you wish. It is true you can act most easily
through those faculties that are now most largely developed;
you can do, with the least effort, the things which "come
naturally;" but it is also true that if you will make
the necessary effort you can develop any talent." (Wallace
D. Wattles, How to Be A Genius--1911).
You may have noticed that in the first few lessons we had
you think of the minuteness of the atom and the vastness of
the heavens. You were given astronomical numbers to think
about, along with some deep philosophical thought which required
much introspection. The purpose behind this was to get you
to exercise your brain, to think along news lines of thought,
to increase your mental circuitry. Perhaps you suffered mild
mental fatigue. You would experience a similar fatigue in
your physical body if you did physical work which you were
not used to. IT IS BY SIMILAR MENTAL GYMNASTICS THAT THE BRAIN
MAY BE BUILT INTO A VERITABLE DYNAMO OF MENTAL ENERGY AND
POWER.
The hardest task that we have as human beings is to think.
The entire phenomena of drinking, drugs, the never ending
search for physical pleasure, the reading of dime a dozen
paperback novels, staring stupidly into a television set,
serves one purpose. That purpose is to escape thought. This
has been the biggest folly of modern man. He is actually fleeing
the one thing that can transform his life into a glorious,
radiant, indescribable joy; THOUGHT. There is nothing that
can make you a failure except your thoughts. On the other
hand, there is nothing that can ever make you great or successful
except your own thought.
Before any act takes place, great or small, it is preceded
by a thought of a like nature. Before any evil deed took place,
an evil thought was thought. Before any great act was committed,
it was preceded by a great thought created in the mind. Your
thoughts determine your actions, your actions determine your
habits, your habits build your character, your character determines
your destiny or position in life. You are where you are, and
what you are as a result of the way you have thought in the
past. Where you will be and what you will be in the future
is being determined with unerring precision by the thoughts
you are thinking now.
"You can do what you desire to do and become what you
want to be. When you fix your mind on some ideal and proceed
as herein after directed, all the power of your being is turned
into the faculties required in the realization of that ideal;
more blood and nerve force go to the corresponding sections
of the brain, and cells are quickened, increased, and strengthened
and your mental circuitry will be greatly expanded. The proper
use of the mind will build a brain capable of doing what the
mind wants to do. THE BRAIN DOES NOT MAKE THE MAN: THE MAN
MAKES THE BRAIN!!!" (Wallace D. Wattles)
The following five hints for developing superior mind power
are the condensation and essence teachings of many schools
of thought and courses of study on mental development. Don't
pass them by lightly because of their apparent simplicity.
It is best to take each "drill" and perform #1
the first day, then do #2 the second day and so on. After
spending the five days doing the five drills in an honest
effort to develop higher, mental powers, if you do not experience
a transformation of your mental self, I would suggest disregarding
this entire course of lessons.
But we know that if you will make each hint the object of
one full days attention, you will experience not only an increase
in mental power, but your consciousness and life will be enriched,
because your mind will be brought closer in harmony with its
most natural functions. Those involved in experiencing life
to the fullest. To live more of life, be more aware.
HINTS FOR DEVELOPING SUPERIOR MIND POWER
1. Train the senses to distinguish more and more stimuli
by concentrating on them individually. See all you can see,
hear all you can hear, savor flavors and aromas, feel as
deeply and intensely as you are capable of feeling. This
develops the power of perception.
2. Think in terms of differences instead of likenesses.
Take notice of variety and diversity. See all things as
distinct, unique and specific. This develops the power of
discrimination.
3. Think in terms of detail. Take close notice of pattern
and texture; of the variation of color, shades and hues.
This develops sensitivity and awareness.
4. Think in terms of THINGS instead of word symbols for
things. This brings you in closer contact with the thing
itself and more in tune with the facts of life.
5. Let each new idea or thought form the center of a mass
of associations. Relate each new thought to other ideas
or experiences of a like nature. This develops the power
of association and increases the mental circuitry as well
as assuring the permanence of new ideas in the memory.
In brief, think and relate, relate and associate, associate
and think and grow in intelligence and brilliance of mind.
TO DEVELOP THE LEGS IT IS ONLY NECESSARY TO RUN.
TO DEVELOP THE BRAIN IT IS ONLY NECESSARY TO THINK!!
