Directing Energy
In the first lesson, we discussed the atomic structure of
the Physical Universe. We spoke of the Universe as being composed
of energy or electrical charges in differing degrees of attraction
or rate of vibration. We discussed a few of the properties
of Energy and touched on a few of the laws that govern its
function. One of the purposes of Lesson One was to start your
mind thinking in terms of Energy and Law. The Universe is
composed of Energy and governed by Law. The unknowable part
of Mans nature is Living Energy or stated more properly, the
Living Energy within Man is Life itself.
The tiny electrical unit that becomes the building block
of the Physical Universe is the smallest thinkable point in
space and time that possesses the quarternary properties of
Life; i.e., Consciousness, Sensation, Intelligence and Volition.
The Living Energy that animates mans brain and body, or his
Life, is not a point in space and time, nor is it composed
of these tiny points. The Living Energy, Life itself, the
Real You, exists separate and independent of "time"
and "space." The Mind becomes aware of Time and
Space through the medium of the sense organs, nervous system,
and brain. The Real You lies beyond Time and Space. This realm
of Life and existence has been termed by many as the "fourth
dimension." Irregardless of what term we use to designate
this state of being, the fact remains that this Eternal Reality
exists and is expressing itself through your brain and body
at this time.
Behind each individual lies this Omniscient, Omnipotent
realm of Life with which he is linked and which constitutes
the unknowable part of his own being. Yet man stumbles along
blindly, the helpless prey of sordid circumstances and what
he calls "Fate." The individual who begins to become
aware of the powers that are lying dormant within his own
Soul, and who earnestly endeavors to live the life that is
conducive to their unfoldment, inevitably experiences an influx
of new power and strength. The acquisition of this power is
insignificant when compared to the importance of the proper
applications of that power. Emerson once stated: "Power
to him who power exerts." But, the direction in which
this power is exerted to a great extent determines our environment,
our health, our intelligence, in fact, our entire Life and
Destiny.
Because man is the only creature in the visible world that
has the power to think for himself and to choose his own thoughts
and actions, he is the only creature that can speed up or
slow down his personal evolution and progress in life. The
energies of the Life Force are under Man's complete control.
It is for him to decide what to do with these infinite powers.
The principle energies within man's control may be broadly
classed into three categories: Mental, Physical, and Spiritual
(though they are each expressions of the One Energy). In man,
these three principles express themselves harmoniously and
simultaneously as a living, feeling, thinking, willing, acting
organism classified by scientists as the "Homo Sapien."
The Eternal Ego, or Conscious Intelligence (that is, the
God Self or the Real You), contacts the Physical Plane through
the body and brain. As it functions in the and through the
brain, we classify this as our mental energies. As it functions
in and through the glands, organs, muscles, nervous system,
etc., we label this our physical energies or Life Force. The
Energy with which we contract our muscles is the same energy
with which we think.
Through the medium of the mysterious Will, the Ego, Spirit,
or Real Self has direct control of the body and brain. As
the electricity or energy that science calls nerve force animates
the brain or "receiving set," vibrations from the
external environment are registered, and consciousness is
born. The Consciousness produced in each individual brain
results in individual Consciousness, or what is termed a "Conscious
Mind."
The Intelligence responsible for the creation, growth, development,
function, and duration of the human brain and body is the
same Intelligence that resides in and becomes conscious physically
within the brain and body.
If you would like to see Omnipotence displayed before you,
and witness perfection raised to the highest degree, contemplate
the miracle of your own body. The product of more than two-billion
years of evolution, man stands as the crown of creation, yet
Nature's work is not finished. Ever so slowly, Human Consciousness
is evolving and unfolding. The race known as "Mankind"
will eventually evolve into the "Super Man" in the
Age of Self Realization.
Due to the greater complexity of man's body, brain, and
nervous system, he is capable of giving a higher expression
for the Life Force than organisms of a simpler constitution.
The general rule of nature is, the more complex the organism
the higher level and quality of consciousness it will express.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case in man.
Due to the lack of control of his physical passions, emotions,
mental states, and appetites, an unnatural environment and
destructive living habits, as well as years of mind conditioning,
man has done much to descend the level and quality of his
own awareness and intelligence. Even though human consciousness
for the most part is far below the quality the brain and body
is capable of producing, man exists on a much higher plane
of consciousness than the highest animal. This is because
Man is the only creature in the visible world that possesses
Self-Consciousness, a knowledge of the Self as the 'knower,"
the Seeker, the Thinker, the controller of his own thoughts,
actions, life, and destiny.
In all times and in all lands, there have been those rare
individuals that stood out and above the entire race. These
persons always displayed a greater intelligence, a higher
consciousness, a greater creativity and personal power, and
in general were superior beings. These men have been immortalized
throughout history as the great scientists, inventors, philosophers,
seers, saints, prophets, poets, religious leaders, etc. In
short, the greatest men the world has ever known. What was
it that enabled these men to rise so far above ordinary humanity
that they still tower like giants?
The highest thinkers throughout history have always claimed
that these few great individuals were able to give more and
greater expression to the principle of power seeking to express
itself through all men. This they were able to do because
of the superior constitution of their brain and body, and
the fact that they had obtained a high degree of self mastery
which enabled them to control and direct their physical, mental
and spiritual energies to carry out the highest mandates of
the soul.
If we are to realize our full potential, we must emulate
these great men, at least to some degree. We must obtain some
degree of self mastery in order to direct our personal energies
in the task of improving our brains and bodies. As the brain
and body become more refined, they become more efficient instruments
for the expression of the higher self. As the higher self
is given fuller expression, the individual rises in personal
power and strength of character. As the individual becomes
more attuned to the guidance and promptings of the higher
mind, he finds himself increasingly faced with more and greater
opportunities for the application of this power. If the individual
remains true to himself, and perseveres in the application
of his personal power in carrying out the dictates of the
higher self, his rise in greatness and personal success is
rapid and inevitable. It is this that we may speed our personal
evolution and enter the life that results in the peace and
satisfaction that surpasses understanding, the joy that transcends
ecstasy. Self-mastery is its own reward.
At the present, there are very few individuals that have
reached the stage of development where they are perfect channels
for the expression of Spirit. Obviously these persons make
little progress in the phases of life that are really important.
Daily, the obituary columns are filled with the names of thousands
of individuals that have all but wasted their entire lives
in the pursuit of the temporary fleeting illusions of the
physical plane. Sad cases of misdirected energies.
The individual that decides to make the most of his life
and begins to direct his energy and efforts into the development
of the mind and its higher powers, will surely come into the
possession of increasing degrees of personal power. It is
hoped that this development of power is accompanied by a corresponding
Spiritual evolution and unfoldment. It is the three-fold life
and development that is wanted: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual.
The one that falls short in any one of the three, falls short
of the perfect whole.
There is nothing wrong with the desire to possess personal
power. It is, however, wrong to use one's personal powers
for selfish or negative ends. There is no greater cause for
the good than personal power properly applied. Be not afraid
to seek power, nor be ashamed of the quest. But seek earnestly
and diligently all the power you can possess. But most important
of all, seek deeply for the knowledge and interior guidance
to use this power to the highest, most noble good.
The proper use of one's own powers will result in the exact
type of life one wishes to live and the optimum in growth
and development. There is nothing that will aid the individual
more in his growth and development than to come into the vital
realization that everything in the Universe is governed by
absolute, unfailing Law, and that only by proper application
of these Laws can he expect life to yield its greatest joys.
Then and only then can he expect to see a permanent solution
to his personal problems and the attainment of his life's
goals. It is only by living in harmony with the law of our
being that we may find true success in life.
Each individual must receive knowledge of the Laws of Life,
Mind, and Existence, and how to apply them before he can expect
to make progress along any line. We have so far explained
a few of the Laws of Science. We have also touched briefly
on the development of certain mental powers and other related
subjects. We wish now to expose you to two of the most important
Laws in the Universe. If the concepts of these two Laws can
be thoroughly understood, they will serve quite well as guide
posts or reference points in the application of one's powers,
and all personal action, mental and physical. These all important
principles are the Law of Cause and Effect and the Law of
Attraction.
The Law of Cause and Effect is one of the eternal, unalterable
principles that makes possible the creation, continual unfoldment,
and progressive evolution of the Universe. The Law of Cause
and Effect simply stated is action-reaction; action and reaction
being like reverse sides of the same coin. It is impossible
to have one without the other. However, when we are aware
of one, we are not always aware of the other.
The phenomenal Universe is said to be in a continual state
of "becoming." One change proceeding another in
an eternal flow of visible effects and their invisible causes.
There is nothing in existence in any state of being that is
not the result of a series of causes. (except of course the
Causeless, Eternal Principle we term the "Ultimate Reality").
Throughout the Universe, in all of its phases and incessant
activities, there is always evident action and its resultant
reaction. From the creation of the first atom to the dissolution
of the last Sun, the Law of Cause and Effect, Action-Reaction
is ever in operation.
Because Man is a center of consciousness and volition, he
is a cause unto himself, a Law unto himself. The forces, mental
or physical, which he sets into operation, determine his entire
life and existence. It thus becomes important for him to allow
to be produced only those causes that will result in "effects"
of the most beneficial nature.
Fortunately, we have the ability to govern the most powerful
cause in our lives, our thoughts. As our thoughts determine
our actions and reactions, it becomes possible to control
every aspect of our waking lives. Even though we may be surrounded
by appearances of the most negative nature, it is within our
power to determine our reactions to them and the effect they
have upon us. A "bad situation" is bad only if we
allow it to be.
The individual lacking knowledge of his own ability to control
his thoughts and emotions, becomes the prey of circumstances
and environment. Like a person being bitten by ants, but refusing
to brush them away, he suffers the pain inflicted by the stings
of defeat, weakness, poverty, and "circumstances."
These parasites will continue to infest the individual's life
and mind until he generates the mental power to brush them
away. Once he realizes that these vermin can be crushed with
the mere weight of his thumb or blown away with the power
of his breath, he no longer fears any such things. It is by
coming into the realization of our own power over our mind,
that we see the senselessness of human suffering, sorrow,
and fear.
When we come to a thorough understanding of the Law of Cause
and Effect, our actions and reactions become the control levers
for regulating and controlling our entire life and circumstances.
We may either take hold of the wheel and steer ourselves to
our destination, or we may sit idly by as we are blown here
and there by the winds of fate, while the tides and currents
of our desires and passions dash us upon the rocks of defeat.
The instrument that will enable you to obtain complete control
of the Law of Cause and Effect (and hence all else), is the
WILL. All power is will power.
The WILL is the positive, generative, active pole of the
mental dynamo. The negative, receptive, passive pole is your
Desire Force. The actions and interactions of these two principles
are the sole motivating forces in your life. Within this bi-polar
unit of electric will and magnetic desire lies the center
of your being, the Real You, the timeless Infinite Ego, the
Eternal Self, the "I." It would not be untrue to
state, "You are a Unity, composed of a Duality."
Everything is composed of the same substance: Energy. Everything
is animated by the same force: Electricity. Electricity is
the flow of electrons; Electrons are ions of energy. Electric
current is the flow of Energy. The Life-Force or Vital Electricity
is Energy flowing through the wiring and switchboard of the
nervous system and brain. Everything is created and sustained
by the same intelligence, through the bi-polar electrical
unit--the Atom.
For purposes of analogy, the atom may be considered as the
smallest conceivable mind. It is through the interplay, action-reaction
of its two poles, (positive and negative, male and female,
desire and will), that the atoms accomplish the stupendous
miracle of creating the physical plane. The Creative Intelligence
finds full expression by functioning in and through these
infinitesimally small, electrically operated centers of consciousness.
The principal expressed here is in operation on all planes
of being. The ancient aphorism, "As above, so below"
holds true here as elsewhere.
The laws that govern the electric battery, generator, dynamo,
and motor are equally applicable to the atom, the Sun the
solar system, and You. As the atom, through the interactions
of its positive and negative phases creates the Universe,
so also do you create your life, environment and destiny through
the interplay of your Desire Force and Will Power.
As mighty and powerful as the Will is, it is impotent without
its counterpart, Desire Force. The desire force or female
phase is the source of all motivation. This, again, is true
of all phases of being. It is especially evident in the animal
kingdom. It has been well stated that, "Desire is the
fire that generates the steam of the Will." No Desire,
No Will. Little Desire, Little Will. Burning Desire, Unconquerable
Will. Desire determines the Action, the Will Acts. Desire
determines the Goal, the Will is the Means whereby the Goal
is obtained.
The Physical Plane has often been referred to as "the
Gymnasium for the development of the Will." The Will
may be considered as a mental muscle and it may be developed
the same as any muscle of the body; by continued and concentrated
use. In developing any muscle you would first start with a
light weight and gradually progress to a greater weight, until
the muscle became conditioned to handle amounts of weight
that before were beyond your greatest expectations. It is
the same with the Will. If you begin with very small acts
in applying your Will and daily increase this application,
in time you will be able to accomplish tasks that at present
you would not even consider. Do everything with the idea that
you are doing it for no other reason except to exercise and
develop your Will; the harder the task, the greater the development.
Once you have made the decision that you are going to obtain
the self-mastery which leads to the higher life you desire,
it is important to remember that your first trials are the
most important. Because of its significance, you must seize
the first opportunity to apply your Will in the clearing of
that first hurdle. No matter how small or insignificant the
task may seem or how difficult, it is of mandatory importance
that it be conquered. For instance, a man decides to conquer
his bad habit of smoking. Shortly after his decision to quit
smoking, he will undoubtedly receive the impulse or craving
for a cigarette. Instead of fearing or dreading this urge,
he should welcome it as a chance to demonstrate his superiority
over his appetite's and opportunity to strengthen his Will
Power. After successfully refusing to yield to the craving,
he has taken the most important step in reaching his goal.
For a time, the craving becomes stronger and comes in waves
of increasing intensity, but each time he must remember the
importance of clearing the present hurdle. In time, the impulses
begin to grow weaker and weaker until they entirely fade away.
The habit has been conquered, the Will has been strengthened
and the individual has aided his physical and mental well
being immeasurably.
When we come into the vital realization that we are an eternal
entity finding temporary expression through a physical body
and that we have complete control over our bodies and brain
as well as our life and destiny, we then stand at the threshold
of the temple of self mastery and greatness. To enter the
higher life, we must with resolute determination take the
forward step and close the door of weakness and limitation
behind us. It is through the intelligent application of the
Desire Force and Will Power that we control our action and
reaction, and harness the Universal Law of Cause and Effect
in mastering Life and most important, Our Selves.
Self-mastery is power and power, like all else, has its
positive and negative aspects. Misdirected power is a destructive
"cause" that can only produce devastating effects.
As all things proceed in cycles and since man is a cause unto
himself, whatever goes out from him must inevitably return.
This is the Law. Fortunately for man, there is an unalterable
principle that will serve unfailingly as a guide for the proper
application of all power, physical and mental. This is the
Law of Attraction.
The Law of Attraction, as stated elsewhere is "like
attracts like." This is true of our thoughts, our actions,
and our reactions. Whatever type of thoughts we entertain,
attract thoughts of a similar nature; "each produces
after its own kind," so the seed thoughts give birth
to actions of a similar nature. Thoughts are causes that produce
the effect of actions. Actions are causes that produce the
effects of reactions, all of which are of the same nature
as the original thought behind it.
We are impressed here again with the significance of purity
and strength of mind. Until the individual reaches the stage
of development where he acts spontaneously and automatically
from his higher nature, it is wise for him to analyze his
thoughts, impulses, and actions to determine the nature of
these forces. If they are not of an uplifting nature, it is
to the individual's advantage to replace these "causes"
with those that are in harmony with the higher principles.
For as surely as these "causes" go forth from the
individual, they must as surely return.
In all actions, both mental and physical, consider the nature
of the forces behind them. Consider deeply the type of "effects"
you are attracting to yourself. Think and act only from the
highest point of view, and only the best shall be attracted
to you. It is only through thorough understanding and application
of the Laws of Life that "life" can be mastered.
Remember always, every aspect of the physical universe, every
plane of being is governed by absolute, unfailing Law. We
may achieve our highest potential only by working in harmony
with the Laws of our own being. In the calm and quiet of your
meditations, when contemplating the radiant energy of the
Self, the "I AM" presence, the Eternal Ego, the
God-Self, realize and say to yourself, "I AM THE LAW."
